Benefits of steel fabrication in the construction industry

Sheetmetal Improvements & Design • Oct 18, 2021

Metal fabrication involves various techniques applied to a sheet of metal to make metal components.

Among the most common raw materials in construction is structural steel, which is often used for residential, commercial, and industrial construction. Due to steel’s extensive versatility and flexibility, many construction tools and structures are fabricated using steel.

Structural steel fabricators closely work with stakeholders in a wide range of roles in the construction industry to create steel structures for erecting reliable buildings.

Fabricated structural steel products are popular in the construction industry because they are an affordable, extremely durable and highly stable solution for construction projects.

Steel Is The Most Durable And Structurally Sound Material

Several factors contribute to steel’s durability. This material is capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions, including cyclones, gale-force winds and even earthquakes.

A steel frame housing component has the attractive advantage of fire resistance and is able to withstand temperatures of up to more than 1000°C.

Fire resistance is not the only benefit of steel. It is also resistant to termites, creeping, splitting, cracking, and rotting; virtually everything wood is susceptible to.

Because steel will not age or decay nearly as quickly as other construction materials, it is classified as having long-term durability.

Steel Is Very Simple To Fabricate Into A Wide Variety Of Materials

If you want low maintenance, corrosion-resistant and good-looking materials, steel is your best choice.

As well as being ideal for use as beams for constructions of all sizes and shapes, you can also form the alloy into bars, wires, sheets, tubes, scaffolding, ladders, barriers, and other essential elements of construction.

Fabricated Steel Is Highly Cost-effective

Steel is one of the most cost-effective materials used in construction. As an initial expenditure, steel is not cheap, but due to its short and long term benefits, the price one pays for steel is a cost-effective investment.

The time saved by using steel in construction is perhaps the biggest contributor to steel’s cost-effective nature. Using fabricated steel allows for structures to be built more rapidly with fewer workers on-site, all of which reduces labour costs and equipment hire and street blocking fees.

Erecting the building faster also enables the business to be operating sooner, thereby reducing revenue lost through closure.

Steel Is Recyclable And Reusable

Sustainability is more than just a buzzword in the modern age. It is critical in every construction project as the world shifts toward a more environmentally responsible place.

In 2020, the steel market was valued at $353.30 billion USD, and by 2021, the iron and steel scrap recycling market size is expected to reach $380.74 billion USD.

Steel’s metallurgical properties mean that it doesn’t degrade when recycled. The material can be melted down and reused infinitely without compromising its integrity.

Steel can also be recycled, so it creates less environmental impact than the creation of raw materials. For example, using recycled steel to make steel cans uses 75% less energy than producing them from raw materials.
